Mary Alaniz, 77, of Avondale, passed away on May 8, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Mary was born August 6, 1935 in El Reno, Oklahoma, to Emilio and Maria Alaniz.  Mary was a parishioner of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and was a volunteer firefighter for the City of Avondale for 10 1/2 years.
 
Mary is survived by her husband of 54 years, Marcelino Vasquez; 3 daughters, Evangelina Vasquez and Porfiria Valdez, and Mitzi; 8 sisters, Margarita Alaniz, Mary Bower, Josie Cordova, Mary Lou Krawietz, Terry Cruz, Eleanor Espinoza, Lupe Hellem, and Mary Ellen Tequida; 2 brothers, Ramon Tequida and Manuel Tequida; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.  Mary was preceded into death by her parents, Emilio and Maria Alaniz, and brothers, Ruben and Emilio Alaniz.
 
Mary was a Volunteer Firefighter, a Jack of all Trades, and wore many hats.  She was a Nana to many children in Avondale.  Mary was fearless.
 
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 9:00am, with a rosary at 10:00am. Mass will follow at 10:30am, all services to be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, located at 539 East La Pasada Boulevard in Goodyear.  Burial will immediately follow the Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery, located at 10045 West Thomas Road in Avondale.
