Amalia Cordova Riley, 88, of Glendale, passed away at home on April 13, 2012. She was born on June 15, 1923 in Peoria, Arizona to Amalia Gutierrez and Juan Cordova. Amalia was a lifelong resident of Arizona, and was raised in Tolleson. She was the daughter of the first sherriff of Tolleson. She had worked as a bartender, a homemaker, loving mother and also was a dedicated wife of her husband while in the Army. She would definitely be designated as the matriarch of the family. Amalia was also involved in Chicanos Por La Causa.
Amalia is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Riley. She is survived by her daughters, Guadalupe, Andrea and Sarem; her sons, Bobby, Francisco and Jose Luis; and her sisters, Elisa Ordonez and Josephine (Lupe) Holland. She was a special loving grandmother to 23 grandchildren and 61 great-grandchildren.
Amalia loved to sing and dance, she enjoyed and loved her family dearly and will be sadly missed. We will always keep all her smiles and laughter and the love she gave her family in our hearts. She now safe in Jesus’ arms.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 19, from 10:00am-12:00pm at Avenidas Funeral Chapel in Old Town Avondale. A Rosary will be recited during the visitation at 11:30am. A Funeral Service will follow the visitation starting at 12:00pm, also at Avenidas Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John Moreno officiating.
