Richard Joseph Martinez III “Joey”, 23, of Avondale passed away on July 24, 2011. Richard was a big man, but as big as he was in size, he had an even larger heart. A man that was very comfortable with himself and his faith, he was a true believer in karma, and was forever striving to do better. Richard was forever sharing a specific saying, “I’m gonna do better”. He had dreams of being at home, having a good family and a good girl by his side. Richard very much loved his children and has always been a good dad. One of his favorite pastimes included fixing cars, especially off-road four wheel drive. He liked to “swag”, dress in nice clothes, with deep blue being his favorite color, and always wanted to look good. Richard enjoyed spending time at the casino, but also knew his limit on the amount of time spent there. He enjoyed dining at Mariscos, dancing to hip-hop, or listening to oldies. Richard went home to be with his grandpa, so that the two of them can spend that simple time together that they so enjoyed, “moonie-rigging” those things that they had left behind in life.

Richard is preceded in death by his grandfather, Abundio Cabrera.  He is survived by his children, Mariah, his daughter, Armani, his son, and their mother Celena Hernandez; his mother, Veronica Cabrera; his father, Richard Barela Martinez; his step-father, George Parra; his sister, Teesha Martinez; his brother, Jacob Martinez; his grandmother, Margaret Cabrera; his aunts, Dianna, Angela, and Juanita; his uncle, Gordie; his sisters-in-law, Sarena and Chrystal; as well as numerous cousins.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 2 from 9:00am-10:00am at Victory Outreach Church in Phoenix. Service will follow the visitation also at Victory Outreach Church beginning at 10:00am. Burial will follow the service at Holy Cross Cemetery in Avondale.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to his two children at the Arizona Central Credit Union, in person, to account #362007. The family will also be accepting donations on behalf of Richard’s children at the service.

Please feel free to share your condolences with the family and also your thoughts with friends. Perhaps a short funny moment or cherished time you spent with this loved family member who will sorely be missed and forever remembered.
