Ruby Ruth Avila, 69, of Avondale, passed away on October 3, 2011. She was born on December 20, 1941, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Joseph and Refujia Juarez. An Arizona native and a resident of South Phoenix, Ruby and her husband, John, moved to the Avondale area 20 years ago, where they accepted Jesus Christ into their lives and joined the Harvest Outreach Christian Center in Old Town Avondale. Ruby was very proud of her church, and exceptionally found of its members that she considered her second family. It was not uncommon to find her bragging about her church to family and friends. She was very actively involved with Harvest Outreach Christian Center up until the day of her passing. Of all the places that Ruby had traveled to, Santa Maria, California was definitely her favorite. She enjoyed spending time there and long, quiet walks on the beach, staring at the emerald green surf, which just so happened to be her favorite color. Ruby enjoyed sampling various types of food, with Chinese definitely being her favorite. Of all the sweets that she enjoyed, chocolate was her number one. Just ask John, as he is the one that would always bring it to her. Ruby had a very special, close relationship with her daughter, Joann. Not that she treated any of her children differently; it’s just that she enjoyed a very special mother-daughter bond with her. Let’s not forget about those Thursday lunches with her sister, Yvonne. No matter what the schedule for the week, she was always quick to ensure that it revolved around those Thursday lunches. Probably one of the most personal times to Ruby, was that time that she took to put in her rollers. Heaven forbid anyone should catch her in the act. When she seemed a little confused or disoriented, her children we’re quick to tell her, “Mom, you have your rollers too tight again”. Family time was very important to Ruth. She loved to cook for her family, anything, it didn’t matter. And they did enjoy it. Christmas time was her favorite, or for that matter, any holiday that meant family gathering time. Ruby worked very hard to promote her appearance, and loved the compliments she received on her nails, which were not fake, and the same for her eyelashes. According to her husband, John, Ruby was a very fun-loving person to be with, and that will definitely be missed the most.

Ruby is survived by her husband, John; her daughters, Joann, Eleanor and Geraldine; her sons, Chris, Alex and Adrian; her sisters, Yvonne Gonzales and Sylvia Juarique; her brother, Johnny Juarez; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 6 from 5:00-8:00pm at Harvest Outreach Christian Center in Old Town Avondale. Service will be held on Friday, October 7 at 10:00am also at Harvest Outreach Christian Center. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at 10:00am at Holy Cross Cemetery in Avondale.

  1. It was always a joy to visit and fellowship with Ruby. She was always happy and upbeat, smiling and encouraging, despite what she may have been going thru. We are truly blessed to have had her in our lives - not only as a friend but as a sister. Those of us left behind are at a deep loss with you gone, but we are certain that you are resting in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior.

With all our love and deepest sympathies,

I remember talking to you like it was just yesterday, and receiving your letters telling me "to keep my head up all the time". Thanks for always being there to encourage and love me. You will be missed but never forgotten.

  3. Ruby was a joyful, inspirational Sister in the Lord to my family. While she will be deeply missed here in our earthly lives we find comfort that she has finished the race, fought the good fight and will soon be receiving her Crown of Righteousness. Ruby, “We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” 1Ths 1:3

  4. Ruby was such a tenderhearted woman of God. Ruby loved her family so much. She would brag about you whenever she could. She was a prayer warrior for her family. She was proud of you (her family) even when you made the wrong choice. Ruby was a God fearing woman of God and she will be greatly missed. I will always see her sitting in her favorite spot in church. Ruby was a friend as well as a sister in the Lord. Ruby will be greatly missed. I will miss her hugs the most besides her. Her prayer was that one day she would see her whole family going to a Christian church. Brother John and family we love you, keep the faith and stay strong during this time. We are there for you and your family.
    Your sister in Christ
